Replace Needed

We need to replace much of this page with direct text that isn't from Wikipdedia and other sites, plus also cite and make clearer what are quotes from other places. --MPH (talk) 18:41, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

I agree with you MPH, when I made this page I didn't have so much dexterity in editing - I believe I still don't have lol -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 23:39, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
That's okay, Ellakbhesse! We encourage everyone's contributions and we have no requirement for things to be written amazingly <3 Anything can be added to and built on, so please keep adding! When it comes to copying text directly from places like Wikipedia, though, it's best to avoid this unless it's clearly marked as a quotation with a source added. Apart from potential issues with copyright, text appearing on other wikis/sites won't be from a fandom perspective, so they wouldn't be appropriate for Fanlore in that form. Does that make sense? --enchantedsleeper (talk) 11:24, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

enchantedsleeper I got your point, and I rewrote much of the content on the page removing as much of the parts I copied from the respective site as I could. But I think this is still not correct, right? I'll kind of leave this edit to whoever wants to fix it. I'm not sure I can think of new ways of writing and detailing the glossary term without repeatedly falling into something already written, but thanks for the feedback -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 13:04, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

cites and excerpts

Hey all, it's unclear to me what are direct quotes from other websites on this page. One example is the second reference. If it is a quote which the reference suggests with the word "excerpt," then it needs to be in quotations or highlighted as such. Where did this come from? "Excerpt from Cult Following Wikipedia Page, with references to the article: "The Official Cult TV Magazine". Archived from the original on 2007-05-13. Retrieved 2020-07-31." The references now take me to either a splash page that doesn't have this text on it, or the last one goes to a page that's no longer online.

As for the TV Tropes text, how much of that is a quote from that page and how much is original here on Fanlore?

Are there other parts of this page that have been borrowed from other sites?

It's really, really important that we are very clear about citing our sources, and are very transparent and upfront where our direct quotes come from, as well as not borrowing too heavily from official canon places, Wikipedia, other wikis, and TV Tropes. Linking to these sites is fine, but Fanlore's focus (fan reaction, fanworks, fan discussion) is not these other place's focus. This may make this page's intro and explanation much shorter, but that it preferable to having so much text from other sites. --MPH (talk) 23:01, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, as for the excerpt with reference to the tv trope, there were some lines that if you want I can completely change it in italics. I used them to complement the eur text I completely reedited it from scratch, that is, I wrote reading about cult following and editing everything to not be the same, adding information I knew by heart and the like. I don't speak English, I don't understand the language very much, but I know how to do it paraphrase and was trying to make the text better after the conversations about being too much like Wikipedia. as for the excerpt taken from Wikipedia, you can edit it, remove it and the like. I still do not I totally understand Fanlore I'm trying to edit as much as I can in the right way with the right quotes, exact references to help in the future. if the page has errors can you help me to fix it, I know it's nice of you to point out the mistakes made, but could you please, if you don't mind, edit what may be far beyond the site's limit? I wanted to edit it for the better after you guys reported the Wikipedia copy and paste issue. The article can be edited and improved by everyone correct? I did what I could and I think it would be feasible to modify more and more for the better, but I think just pointing out what's wrong and kind of not fixing it to maybe improve it can sometimes seem like just - p for someone who doesn't see how much everyone contributes to Fanlore - a possible pet peeve with the article. I don't know if my text will be well understood. I'm using Google translator to help me. What I mean is that it's no use just pointing out that this or that isn't right and even with changes the error is still there, when it could be easier maybe to remove that piece, edit it or something. I don't know why I'm a bit obsessed with making this page look as good as possible, it seems like a point of honor to make it perfect -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 01:10, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
I really appreciate how kind you all are to us, I started editing on the site to try to be useful in something I know how to do best - talk about fandoms - but sometimes I feel that the idiomatic border gets in my way a lot. The phone I use to edit this old one, and I know that's no excuse. I really love seeing notifications of your edits improving the excerpts that we added, expanding things here and there, this page I created last year in order to improve the understanding of the culture of cult following but at the time I didn't know how to edit well. Now I understand more about it, but I apologize for not being able to make everything more correct. I'm not quite sure how to thank you for being part of Fanlore and being able to help and learn. If to make the page better it is necessary to restructure everything from the beginning I think it would be more viable someone with more time on the site to re-page the page -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 01:17, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

We're all working together, doing our best, and adding what we know. It's part of what makes this all so interesting and fun. :-) We're a good team.
I think one of the main things to do is not pull info and text off of other sites, even when one changes a few words to make it different. I know that this makes things much, much harder, especially when working in a different language, but it's a very important point. It also means that sometimes new pages, and pages you add to, are going to feel less than complete due to these limitations. But that's really, really okay. Fanlore is a work-in-progress by definition. It's better to have one's own words, even if they are not "perfect" or complete, than words and content from somewhere else.
I reworked the cult following page a bit, and I'm pretty sure I took out the TV Trope and Wikipedia bits. I also added the very bare bones of some ideas and sections that can go on this very interesting page. --MPH (talk) 13:30, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
