Talk:Ascension (Star Wars TPM story)

There's a few things I'd like to ask about here. The first is that the author's name Artemis leads to a disamb page, and not her author page. Which leads to the question....what are the naming conventions for fans with non-unique names? Should we create a page Artemis (Fan) instead? Second, all of the author's fic (Ascention included) seems to only exist on the wayback cached geocities site. Should we/Open Doors work to import their archive into AO3? A quick search on AO3 for their fic yielded no results. Thanks all --Linfin (talk) 20:43, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

First question, until there is another fan linked on Fanlore named Artemis, then this one should be Artemis (fan). When, and if, another fan named Artemis is linked on Fanlore, then those fans will have to be disambiguated further: such as Artemis (fan 1) and Artemis (fan 2), or some other way that makes them unique, such as Artemis (vidder) or Artemis (fanwriter).
Second question, Open Doors isn't an option for this fan (at least at this point) for two reasons: First, Open Doors doesn't archive single fanworks or the fanworks of individual fans, only entire archives where a fan is part of bigger content. Second, Open Doors doesn't archive things without fan consent (which is under the umbrella permission of the archive the fan is a part of). The best solution would be to contact the fan (if possible) and encourage them to archive their own work at AO3. This is, of course, fraught with problems such as dead emails, dead fans, and a variety of other hurdles. It's frustrating, I know, to feel these fics slip away without being able to stop it, but that is the impermanence of the Internet and the nature of fanworks in unprotected environments. --MPH (talk) 23:30, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! I've found an email for them and hopefully they'll move forward with archiving their work. If they give permission for their work to be archived on AO3 can another person put it up? How would that work?--Linfin (talk) 00:58, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
For similar names we often add the fandom they were known in or what they were known for (vids, fic). So Artemis (Sentinel) would be one option. If there are 2 Sentinel fans with the same name and one vidded and the other wrote fic we might add Artemis (Sentinel vidder). Basically this is somewhat free form in that you can choose Fandom or Fanwork for the initial Disambiguation. If we do get another similar combination we can drill down further. Re archiving, if they give permission you can offer to help them set up an account for them and to post to ao3. I did this for some of my older fandom friends. MeeDee (talk) 07:18, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
