Some Publishing Controversy

It was part of the lone-running AMC Press' Best of the Net fanzine series (#11 and #12).

However, before copies were shipped, DementorDelta announced that she had not given permission for her online fiction to be published.

AMC Press and its distributor LionHeart Distribution withdrew the fanzine until both sides clarified that there had been a mis-communication over the publishing.[1]

After later clarification, DementorDelta gave her permission to allow the fanzines to be sold. She would go on five months later to publish some of her online fan fiction with another zine publisher, Fidelius Press in Collected by Dementor Delta.

Message from the Zine's Distributor

On April 24, 2004, before the issue was resolved, the owner of LionHeart (the distributor), commented on a mailing list:

Please please please,

if you are on one of these lists, try to let folks know that LionHeart is like Barnes & Noble. We just sell the books. We didn't publish, take, use, or anything else, DementorDelta's stories. Yes, I knew they were net fic, they came to me as Best of the Net 11 and 12, which is a series AMC has been doing for years. I've been carrying AMC books for 3 years without incident. I had no reason to be concerned.

It seems some folks think I'm the publisher, hence, I'm a thief. Of course, none of them actually wrote to me and ASKED ME anything, or have a clue.

I understand the author is upset. JK Rowling would probably be upset with her, so we have to have some degree of realistic perspective, and try to act like civilized people. I'm not sure why this ever went to the immediately rabid stage, involving so many fen who have no idea who is who, or what is what, instead of quiet notice to the publishers and myself and the author, and those involved simply HANDLE IT. Downside of the net. Immediate panic. Lots of comments on Live Journal, and not ONE email came to me at LionHeart asking me about it.

And I really do think DD has cause to be upset if she didn't feel she had a publishing agreement in place. I would be, certainly. I spoke to TACS, and she felt AMC did have such an agreement. They will have to settle it.

Bottom line? The zines are OFF LionHeart until I hear from both sides that the issue is resolved and they can be sold.

**NO COPIES OF THESE ZINES HAVE BEEN MADE.** Nor will they be, until I see such an agreement. I'll be contacting anyone who ordered to see if they'd like a refund, a credit, or to wait until the dispute is resolved.

This is LionHeart policy in case of dispute, though this is the first time I've had to invoke it.

With [B's] OK, I'd ask that this message be posted anywhere this discussion has taken place. WITHOUT the [redacted] headers, please.[2]

Issue 1

Tales from The Pensieve 1 contains 184 digest-sized pages.

The color cover and b&w interiors are by TACS.

All characters are above the age of consent.

  • ‘Rhyme and Reason': Harry decides to seduce Severus with love poetry; unfortunately it was written by Ron Weasley.
  • ‘Room For One More': Harry finds other uses for ugly, outdated, but very velvety robes.
  • ‘When Harry Kissed Severus': It's time for the Xmas Gala Ball with enchanted sprigs of mistletoe floating around over Snape's head. Does Harry have enough nerve to keep with tradition in front of the whole school?
  • Parseltongue-tied': Harry's out of school and his best friend turns out to be a snake, to whom he confides all his deepest desires about Severus after all, he knows it will never get back to Snape because how's a snake going to tell anyone who isn't a parselmouth?

Issue 2

Tales from The Pensieve 2 contains 188 digest-sized pages.

The color cover and b&w interiors are by TACS.

All characters are above the age of consent.

  • ‘No Room At The Inn': It's Xmas and every year since Harry graduated, he's turned up on Serverus' doorstep like a lost puppy begging to be taken in for the holidays. After an unintentional revelation, Snape gives him a surprising Xmas present.
  • ‘Unsuited': Voldmort's dead and Harry found himself kissing Snape, who promptly turned around, left and hasn't spoken to him since. Now it's only one week until Harry graduates and he's determined to find and tell Severus how he really feels.. Even if he has to jump in a Pensieve to do it.
  • ‘The Task At Hand': Harry needs Advanced Potions to be an Auror after he graduates, and Snape won't let him in the class, unless he agrees to help Snape with a potion that needs blood from a parselmouth.
