Reactions and Reviews

Kirk and Spock are sharing quarters in a hotel that is past its prime. Their beds are separated by a low wall; they can easily speak to one another before they fall asleep, but they can’t see each other.

Kirk says: “We can talk about things that might otherwise be embarrassing, but, because we can’t see each other, it might not be as difficult.” So Kirk reminds his friend of a conversation they’d had about two other Starfleet officers who might be lovers, then takes the opportunity to tell Spock: “I’ve wondered...what it would be like to...hold you.” Spock doesn’t know what to say, as he hasn’t had similar thoughts at all. So there is silence between them, they both drift off to sleep, but Spock does start to wonder, too. Weeks later Spock decides “that they should at least try it (and he wasn’t sure, right then, exactly what “it” entailed).” But the opportunity to tell Kirk doesn’t arrive. Finally Spock follows Kirk to another hotel on shore leave, but this time Kirk is sharing with McCoy. No matter, Spock double-bunks with Kirk (The captain says, when Spock arrives at the hotel door: “We...um...didn’t know for sure if you’d come, and since the rate for a triple was so much higher....”) And in the middle of the night, Spock so sweetly awakens his captain and asks: “Do you still wonder?”

This is a little gem of a story. Spock is sweet and somewhat naïve without being stupid, Kirk is his captainly self, the emotions between them unfurl in a convincing way. I loved that the simple holding (with McCoy in the next bed!) eventually turns into something a lot more serious—and it must have been noisier, too! I really like Tail Chasing. [1]
