The "Discussion Topic" is the conversation starter used in letterzines and other places of fannish discussion.
With letterzines, it was announced an issue in advance. Some examples of topics include: what would the characters do if they were fired from their jobs, what did fan's think of the current aired season's shows, how did the characters meet, what kind of a pet would the characters get, what would character's sexual fantasies be, and what did one character mean when she or he said something.
Some other phrases that meant the same thing:
- "Recipe for Disaster" in Details at 11
- "Undercover Assignment" in Simon and Simon Investigations
- "TOTM" or "Topic of the Month" in Hanky Panky & Who Do We Trust Times—The phrase was almost never spelled out which reflected the need of printed material to condense content to keep costs down.
- "TOTNI" or "Topic of the Next Issue" was used in later issues of Short Circuit
