Synthesis is a fanmade visual novel for Persona 5. The game was made as part of the ANTITHESIS zine project.
About
Synthesis is a visual novel created for ANTITHESIS, a Persona 5 Joker x Crow roleswap fanzine. In an alternate universe where Goro Akechi leads the Phantom Thieves and Akira Kurusu/Ren Amamiya is the Detective Prince, Synthesis lets you experience Joker and Crow's friendship and rivalry from a whole new perspective.[1]
The game's story was made in tandem to its parent project's theme, which was to explore the relationship between Goro Akechi and the protagonist of Persona 5 in the confines of an alternate universe where the characters switched roles as the protagonist and antagonist, respectively.
The visual novel was advertised to contain over 24,000 words, a New Game Plus mode, original graphics and character sprites, and a branching story with four endings[2].
Development
The game was announced on December 5, 2021 on the ANTITHESIS project's social media account[3]. Anyone who bought a bundle of the ANTITHESIS zine would also receive early access to Synthesis while it was in development. During this time, the zine organizers urged that streamers refrain from streaming the fan game until development was finished[4].
The ANTITHESIS zine project announced the game's release on July 1, 2022[5]. Previously on June 14, 2022, the zine organizers stated that the game would be released free-to-play on itch.io[6].
An update was pushed to the game's download page on July 10, 2022 to fix a missing music credit[7].
