Recs and Reviews

Switch: A Comedy of Terrors by RivkaT - Awesome story. Rivka has managed to do justice to the old body-swapping cliche. It's snarky, funny, clever, and all kinds of fun.[1]

This is one of those stories where two characters switch bodies. It's a damn good one too. The best I've read. RivkaT doesn't go deeply into how the two switch bodies, she explains that quickly and simply right off. What she does go into is Clark and Lex exploring one another's bodies and abilities. Living one another's lives. The main thing I liked about this is that Clark doesn't start explaining all his powers right after the body switch. Oh, no. He doesn't warn Lex at all. He just sits back and hopes that they won't kick in. Or if they do maybe only one of them. So maybe he can just pass himself off as a meteor freak or something. Lex the true scientist that he is also just sits back and waits. Gathers evidence as each new power kicks in. Figuring out all Clark has been hiding as he goes. Coming to understand why Clark hides so much. Becoming afraid for Clark and what other's might do to him if they ever found out. Growing more protective of him as he goes along.

I found both of them very in character. Not sharing any more than necessary. Both with their suspicions about one another. Not revealing anything. Waiting one another out. Seeing who will crack first and ask a question. Or who the pressure will get to first and will fess up. Both silent and watching. I think that's what makes the CLex pairing work for me so very well. Both Clark and Lex are watchers. They sit back and watch those around them. Studying them. Trying to gauge how they should act around them. What they should let show. At their core levels they are a lot alike. They observe the world and only respond when they have as much information as they can. They have both been taught by their parents to do this. To fit in and yet be on the outside at the same time. It's a very fucked up way to be, yet what they both needed to do in order to survive.

Both of them wait for a moment when things come to a head and can't be denied before they have the "big talk". Even the big talk is simple and over quickly. She doesn't waste time on exposition that we already know. She uses only what she has to in order to make Lex understand.

The building attraction to one another is just another layer to the story. Another element that slowly unfolds as we go along. Blended in seamlessly with the plot. Occuring at natural moments here and there, rather than being shoved in to fill in a plot hole.

It's truly a wonderful story. Reaching the potential that a body switching story could in the right hands. I was amazed by it as I went. How deftly she handled it. If you want to see how this cliche'd old plot is done right check this story out.[2]

Another cliche fic. Lex and Clark switch bodies. GAH. So hot.[3]

A bodyswitch fic that works. So well. *snickers*[4]

Entertaining story in which Lex and Clark swap bodies and have to deal with the ensuing complications.[5]
