Smash Campaigning is a type of fan activity popular in video game fandom, where fans attempt to get their favourite characters added in the next iteration of the cross-over fighting game Super Smash Bros. Smash Campaigning first became popular after the announcement of the 3rd entry, Super Smash Bros: Brawl included the series' first third-party characters, Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake, but reached new heights during the Ultimate era, where new characters were regularly added in DLC packs.

Petitions/Fan Groups/unofficial polls

Official ballot

In 2015, Nintendo added the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot to their website for people to nominate and vote for their favourite character to be included in the 4th game. Fans organised drives encouraging people to vote for their favourite characters. Votes in this poll resulted in Bayonetta getting added to the 4th game, and motivated Sora's inclusion in Ultimate, due to him topping the ballot.

In addition to the official ballot, many game sites and smash communities have also ran their own, unofficial ballots, with fans also organising to ensure their favs victory.

Smash Invitation Art

During promotional material for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, characters were seen receiving envelopes with a red wax seal on the back, inviting them to join the fight. These envelopes quickly became the subject of fan art, with artists depicting their favourite characters receiving, or stealing, said invitation.
