Dante (Japanese: ダンテ), alias Tony Redgrave (トニー・レッドグレイブ, Tonī Reddogureibu), is the protagonist of the video game series Devil May Cry. He is a half-human, half-demon devil hunter and the twin brother of Vergil.
Dante is known for his flamboyant, fun personality as well as his moments of extreme stoicisim and a strong tendency towards being emotionally closed off. Some of his most well-known traits are his love of pizza and strawberry sundaes, and his recognizable white hair and red outfit.
Canon Background
Dante is the son of Sparda, a legendary demon who sealed off the demon realm to protect humanity, and a human woman named Eva, and as such has inherited strong demonic abilities. After his mother’s death at the hands of demons when he and Vergil were children, Dante adopted the alias of Tony Redgrave and became a mercenary, believing his brother to be dead.
Following the events of the DMC novel, Dante readopted his true name and opened a devil-hunting business, which he named Devil May Cry after the events of DMC3. Dante continued to operate as a devil hunter throughout the series, using his incredibly strong demonic powers to become an extremely powerful devil hunter. Despite his skill, Dante’s poor money management and spending habits, as well as his huge debts to Lady, have made him very poor; this is a running joke in the series.
After the story of Devil May Cry 5, Dante entrusted the Devil May Cry business to Nero while he and Vergil work together in the underworld to destroy the roots of the demonic Qliphoth tree.
