Reactions and Reviews

1985

...in line with my new policy of sedateness and restraint concerning Meg's work, I only want to say, I LOVE THIS THING. I read Cry to Heaven, too. Ann Rice is very sensitive to homosexuality, and she's a very intense and thoughtful writer. Perhaps she's another pseudonym for Meg's real alter ego? [1]

OK, Meg. I've learned from our short and enjoyable acquaintance that you have a wonderfully convoluted mind. "Super Grass" shows me a Bodie and Doyle with very strong personalities and opinions. I especially liked their first encounter. They may not like each other, but they will have to respect each other's abilities. Although I realise that this is an alternate universe, I just have a hard time buying that they are gay. Maybe attracted to each other, maybe exposed to and liberal about male bonding—but not exclusively gay. The attraction here is just physical. There's not enough conversation for them to know each other well enough for it to be anything else. Bodie, at least, is playing with accurate information, but Doyle is drawn to a man who is an informer. If you don't bring the knowledge of "the real" B/D to this budding relationship, what you have is Doyle being drawn by the forbidden, the distasteful—and doing his guilt trip. After all this, let me say I liked the story. The sexual tension was adroitly done and Doyle's confusion, longing and self dislike (hatred is too strong) for being drawn to a man he shouldn't like kept me very interested. I think I needed to be in Bodie's head a bit sooner than his explanation at the end. Doyle needn't know what he is thinking, but I would have liked a glimpse of his inner turmoil. I know this is Doyle's POV, but the ending smacks of being too pat. Yes, yes, yes—I like happy endings just as much as everyone else so stop hitting me. And, I liked the story. It's well written and captures the characters in an unusual light. I just think the audience is manipulated into accepting that happy ending on the basis of our familiarity with their non-alternate universe relation ship rather than because the Bodie character in this story demonstrates any inclination that the relationship is viable. Doyle is in CI5 and is sent to look after a super grass - Bodie - for whom he feels only distaste and contempt until his sexual nature takes over. His fascination with Bodie takes the edge off his alertness, and it is luck more than skill that he saves Bodie's life when an attempt is made on it. Later, another attempt is made on the way to Court and is foiled, and Doyle learns that Bodie is from Special Branch. When he leaves CI5's office in anger Bodie follows him to a park, and reveals that he is gay and wants Doyle - he had realised that Doyle wanted him from Ray’s reaction while lying on top of him for protection. Bodie has several times turned down an offer to join CI5 but because of Doyle it seems he will now accept.

I didn't particularly like this story on my first read, but have grown to like it better. However, I still think Doyle wouldn't let sexual lust interfere in his job of guarding someone's life. And tho' the word itself is never used, the tacit sense of commitment to each other seems excessive after only 10 days and especially since they know nothing really about each other.

An OK story, but nothing special. [3]
