Reactions and Reviews

I am such a sucker for 'poor Spock' stories, and this one really put our favorite Vulcan through the mill. I felt for him so much that I was even able to suspend my disbelief at the curses he tended to mutter. (While I don't have any doubt that Spock's misery would have caused him to behave other than 'normal', I'm not sure why swearing would be one of the ways in which he'd behave abnormally, unless he's always had some kind of inner desire to use profanity; in this story he uses it much more than his human friends ever have). This sticks to its point, though I could have used a little more background on why Vulcan appeared to be so 'evil' (for lack of a better word), however subtlely. (At least Sarek had the excuse of insanity.) I can't quite believe that logical, professionally-trained doctors would so easily forget that Spock was half-human. A lot of secondary plot points were left to the reader's imagination, but the main plot -- Spock's pain and learning to cope with his disabilities -- was presented well and had a satisfying resolution. Also, I simply enjoyed Kirk's protectiveness and caring toward Spock. [1]
