Steelsings was a Tamora Pierce fansite, mailing list, and community centered on the Tortall universe. It was founded in July 1998 by Fallon Elise. It came into Queen Em's ownership in February 1999. Tamora Pierce was said to have visited their message boards.[1]
Community
The site was associated with a number of chatrooms and message boards, including The Inn, Steelsings' Tamora Pierce Chatroom, and Steelsings. Lists of AIM and LiveJournal usernames were provided, as was a list of users interested in becoming penpals. There was a mailing list and a webring. Over 200 messages were left in the guestbook.
Roleplaying
More than 140 characters were registered for the RPG. It was limited to the Tortall universe and did not allow Emelan characters. An Emelan RP was created circa 2004.
Fanfiction
Originally, Steelsings hosted fanfiction, including "group fanfics," to which any user could contribute; RPG fanfics, directly related to the roleplaying community; and standard member-written fanfiction. They also hosted the Icefall zine. In 2006, members created Sword and Circle.
Demographics
Em held a survey which ultimately received over 900 results.[2]
