As in many other fandoms, romantic pairings may be denoted by the characters' names, separated by a slash, e.g., a story labeled as "McKay/Sheppard" refers to a romantic (or simply sexual) story whose primary couple is Rodney McKay and John Sheppard. Parts of SGA fandom also use portmanteaus, combining the two names, as in "McShep" for McKay/Sheppard. Name order has little or no significance.
While using only first names or only last names in pairings may be more logical, in practice SGA fandom often uses a mix, e.g. the John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagan pairing may be referred to as Sheppard/Teyla. As the trend is sometimes male last name/female first name, some fans consider this to be evidence of misogyny in fandom. However, in SGA it tends to be determined by what name is most commonly heard in canon. Teyla Emmagan and Ronon Dex are never addressed by only their last names at any point in canon and usually are called "Teyla" and "Ronon" in pairings, while as the Earth-born characters are referred to by either their first name or their last in canon and in pairings. This trend is most obvious with the character of Jennifer Keller, who is called "Keller" as much or more than "Jennifer" in pairing names, e.g. Rodney/Keller or Ronon/Keller.
The following is a list of some of the common pairing names in Stargate Atlantis fandom.

Teamfic, OT3 and OT4
Trios and quartets of characters are common in SGA fanfic, particularly in reference to romantic entanglements among three or more teammates. (The primary SGA team consists of John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Teyla Emmagan and Ronon Dex.[2]) Trios are referred to by linking the three names with slashes (i.e., Ronon/Rodney/Teyla), and stories which refer to polyamory among all four teammates can also be described in this way (John/Rodney/Teyla/Ronon, for example). However, stories involving all four team members are also often referred to as OT4 (see OTP) or Teamfic.
Hewligan Pairings
Hewligan is a mash-up pairing name combination of "Hewlett" and "Flanigan" - David Hewlett and Joe Flanigan, to be exact, who play Dr. Rodney McKay and LTC John Sheppard. However it is not usually meant as straightforward RPS Name Smoosh (though SGA RPS fic is written about Hewlett and Flanigan as well), but uses the actors' names as stand-in for a group of characters from either of the two actors' past repertoires, who are paired up in crossovers. See Hewligan for more detail on which characters and sources are used.
