Significant examples
- Frasier took Kelsey Grammer's psychiatrist character from Cheers and gave him his own series.
- Originally known as Jumpman in Donkey Kong, the Super Mario Bros. Video Game franchise turned the renamed Mario character into an industry icon.
- The Fantastic Beasts film series covers a different era in the Harry Potter franchise from that in the original seven books.
- The Vampire Diaries (TV) has two spin-off series. The Originals tells the story of the Original Family in New Orleans, and Legacies (TV) is a next generation series.
