Spindrift is a Kirk/Spock story by Judi.

art for this story by Sweet Dreams studio published in T'hy'la #21: -- "Captain Spock" p. 84a: "Sweet Dreams Studio has done a "Supermanish" type Spock in this B&W pencil for a future painting number 2. The blurt in the upper left hand of the picture somewhat spoils the artwork for me. I am wondering if it was done intentionally so that no one could take the picture out of the zine and use it as an actual artwork? I see no reason why the explanation couldn't have been put at the bottom of the picture. The blurt) informs us that the picture was inspired by the story "Spindrift" by Judy. I have no clue who Judy is nor have I read the story. Obviously by looking at the "uniform" Spock is wearing (what little he is wearing) the ship that he is Captain of must be a very interesting ship. I sure he has no shortage of men and women signing up to serve under him. This is one handsome sexy looking Spock, who is rather similar to the picture on p. 84 a, but I think is more powerful and dynamic looking in this pose. This is a study for future painting #2." [1]

It was published in the print zine T'hy'la #17.

Summary

"A/U: Kirk is rescued from his disabled ship by the Enterprise captained by Spock who stills desires him. Prequel: Chiaroscuro."

Reactions and Reviews

1996

It’s very odd the things that strike you as you read a story. I enjoyed this fast paced tale of alternate Kirk and Spock. It was a sequel but I followed the plot easily. However it was the author’s feel for the realities of space flight that really impressed me. The episode where Kirk is a captive

of the Klinzai ( off to face a fate worse than death) was full of vivid details . I could almost feel the vibrations and the claustrophobia of the ship. It gave a texture to the story that I haven’t gotten in many stories.

Has Judi spent much time in a submarine or has she beamed up and forgotten to tell the rest of us? It was very well done.[2]

1999

First of all, this story is one of my all time favorites for many, many reasons. I am not a writer but know good writing and it is one of the best stories I have ever read including professional work. There are many so-called professionals who could take a lesson from this writer’s work, as well as that of a number of other K/S writers. There is an unbelievable wealth of talented writers in this genre.

The author has written the best descriptions of Spock I have read yet. A number of writers make the mistake of describing Spock’s lips as thin which they are not. They are “perfectly sculpted.” He’s not terribly attractive by most standards but he does have beautifully shaped lips.

“Tarnished copper muscles” translated a clear visual image that extends to my color work and has helped me a great deal. he would indeed have beautiful “tarnished copper muscles.” As a genetically superior being from a planet with a denser gravity, he should be lean and well developed.

Aside from successfully incorporating bi-sexuality, menage a tois, same sex and incest all in one story, the author has created a great and exciting plot. (exciting on at least two levels!)

As much as I wanted to hate Spock’s sister T’Isha, I found I really liked her in spite of the fact that she’s something of a tart. I think Spock really needs a sister especially one as well written as she is. In my opinion, of course, I found the device of the habit of both brother and sister announcing when they were going to “come” both clever and amusing.

This is a stunning piece of work.[3]

In this universe, Spock is captain of the Enterprise and Vulcan rules an empire in place of "our" Federation; Klingons, Cardassians, and Orions are the primary enemies. In a previous installment, Kirk has apparently been an abused sex slave on Minos, rescued by Spock, and sexually involved with Sarek. In this installment... well, it's complicated. Spock's heart's desire is to bond with Kirk but without forcing him; Kirk is afraid of Spock; Sarek has had a string of human lovers, all reminiscent of Kirk, the latest being Chris; Spock and his half-sister T'Isha are lovers; also T'Isha and Kirk... basically lots of sex with everyone pairing up in all kinds of combinations. Meanwhile back in the plot... plague destroys just about everyone on Vulcan and many other worlds, and in the resulting chaos and mayhem, our heroes are captured and raped and tortured and rescued and put back together by McCoy (who remains rather avuncular and sweet even in this universe) and captured and tortured some more by the villains and ... eventually T'Pring (now the abbess of Gol) uses her extraordinary psi powers to help Spock retrieve the dying Kirk by mind-meld - but in an odd act of vengeance (paying Spock back for un-bonding with her) she also bonds Spock and Kirk - inextricably. Spock fears that Kirk - now head over heels in love with Spock because of the bond - will grow to hate him for the new dependence, and sends him far away to DS9 while Spock and the Enterprise take up policing trade routes for Earth as the planet begins to put life back together after the universal catastrophe. But at the next pon farr, they will be drawn together in joyful reunion. Not a universe to my taste, particularly - but it did keep me reading.[4]
