South of Nowhere is an American teen drama television series created by Thomas W. Lynch.

Canon

The show follows the lives of the members of the Carlin family (Paula, Arthur, Glen, Clay, and Spencer) as they adjust to moving from Ohio to Los Angeles, California. One of the main focuses include the relationship between Spencer Carlin and her bisexual friend, Ashley Davies. The close friendship between Ashley and Spencer led Spencer to question her own sexuality, a subject which created controversy before the show first aired. It was the first series on The N to deal with such a subject relating to the primary characters.[1]

Fandom

What dedicated fans find in South Of Nowhere is not just a love story—there was familial homophobia, struggles with self-acceptance, and trying to find out who you are among the chaos.

That can already feel impossible at 16, but try being a teenage lesbian.

Although fans were disheartened when South of Nowhere was canceled, their passion helped to spur “Five Years Later” webisodes, which saw Spencer and Ashely not only still a couple, but married and expecting a baby. In today’s TV landscape, where gay and bi female characters characters are often sacrificed (sometimes literally) to create more storylines for their straight counterparts, it gave the characters—and viewers—a real fairytale ending.[2]

2017 saw a small resurgent in the fandom as Gabrielle Christian (Spencer) and Mandy Musgrave (Ashley) were guests at ClexaCon, hosting a "Spashley reunion". Logo TV also began airing reruns of South of Nowhere, having not been on air for 5 years.

Pairings

The canon relationship between Spencer and Ashley, also known as Spashley, is the main pairing of the fandom.
