"Some Sunny Day" is a short story by fawatson based on Mary Renault's 1953 novel The Charioteer. It was posted in honour of Remembrance Day and the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Synopsis
As Vera Lynn's radio programme plays, it is heard all over England—by Lucy in her kitchen, Laurie in hospital, and Bim on the airfield. Each responds to the songs in his or her own way.
Background
In a note, the author explains that approximately a year after the start of World War II, Vera Lynn began a regular radio programme, “Sincerely Yours”. Her songs, “We’ll Meet Again”, “I’m in the Mood for Love”, and “There’ll Always be an England” are mentioned in the story.
"Some Sunny Day" was written for Week One of Brigit’s Flame's Challenge for October 2010.
Comments
Comments on the story included the following:
- "Nicely done, FAW. I'll just go now, and cry quietly in the corner."—comment by my_cnnr
- "I always liked that song, which made the melancholy lyrics that were interspersed throughout so much more poignant. It sounded like such a grim situation. You always manage to capture the essence of the era beautifully. Another well-written piece. Thank you for sharing."—comment by keppiehed
- "Very nice. Rather sad, given that we know both Bim and Gyp aren't long for this world."—comment by greerwatson
- "Even more poignant when you realise many soldiers' interpretation of that last line substituted 'heaven' for 'sunny day' (one of the tidbits of information I learned when researching this piece)."—response by fawatson
