Reactions and Reviews
1993
If you were in a bad mood, you'd say this was a totally pointless excuse of a story just to "lay" our heroes. enjoyed this.
I was in a good mood and enjoyed this.[1]
1994
Haunting and poetic despite the editor's disclaimer that this was just a "pwp" (plot? What plot?). It follows Kirk and Spock as they go for a late night swim on board the Enterprise. What an absolutely beautiful beginning as they are playing chess and Kirk is distracted: " 'What is it, Jim?' The voice came soft, low. It was the kindest voice, the soothing balm of a soul baked in deserts and echoes and Vulcan arroyos."And I love the description of their relationship until that point- "And so they did"the dance, touching in the line of duty only."
So many interesting, clever moments and lovely language. Even in the description of Spock's swim trunks as Kirk sees them: "His trunks were a vivid, startling blue, darker than his uniform shirt, but lighter than the blues in Spock's hair."
Some delightful "Spockian" things-Spock swims faster than Kirk and Kirk says: 'You don't have to placate me. I'm a big boy.' Spock's eyebrow rose. 'The statement was a fact. Are you in need of placating?' "
A sensitive ending to this lovely, as described, "erotic interlude". [2]
"An erotic interlude-PWP," says the forward. No problem-I'm one of those who loves these stories!
Very nice language-vivid, poetic. I was really floored at times.
A few times, in the beginning, Spock doesn't exactly talk like Spock; other times perhaps overly-Spockian. But better overly than not- recognizably Spock I think.
The darkness inside Kirk-a fascinating image for our golden boy. The quiet times on the ship are dangerous for Kirk-his ghosts have time to mock him; he feels closest to his longings. Great lines.
They'd played chess and suddenly, Kirk doesn't want Spock to leave, blocks his exit. Wonderful intensity.
Exquisite images! (I'm not quoting exactly verbatim.) To acknowledge what they both know is "too hard a step, too far a fall if the step turned out not to be there." They are both ultra-aware of their beautiful compatibility, but to actually speak of it feels, "sacrilegious, terrifying." When Kirk is walking slightly behind Spock, "roles reversed for a moment, choreography confused. ..and Kirk loved it when that happened." Beautiful subtleties.
Spock suggests a work-out. (Right, I said, here goes.) Both pointedly avoiding touch-sports, wrestling, etc. Finally they decide on swimming. (Sure-smart move.) In their swim trunks, both have erections. (Oh, please-help me.) Spock locks the door! Suggests they swim without clothing. Kirk is embarrassed (already half-hard), declines to doff his suit. But Spock does-l could see that gorgeous body! Spock dives in, then Kirk takes off his suit, but Spock is watching from the water. This is so exquisitely intense.
In the water, Kirk is thinking, "Is Spock aroused by me?" "Yes," Spock says , out loud! (Oh god.) Frustration is a powerful sender.
At the side of the pool, Spock: "We are a lot alike...in the way we love each other." Kirk: "Like brothers." Spock: "No.... I assumed you know me better than others."
So Spock leaves the pool, disappointed, wraps a towel around him. Then he pulls (a hesitant) Kirk out of the pool, Kirk with a straining erection. This is a quietly moving scene, Kirk having to deal with his erection, right out there in front of Spock. He must trust Spock as his friend to not be too judgmental about his undeniable, uncontrollable bodily response. It makes Kirk so vulnerable; it's really beautiful.
(I'm sorry - I seem to be recounting the entire story in each and every detail-l can't help it, I loved every single moment.)
Spock: "Can it be in this I must lead?" He grabs Kirk, kisses him, goes down to his knees and.... (Moan-—) Both on the floor; Spock's release- gorgeous.
But, the ending paragraphs, the rest of their of love and sex, was rushed-more like an overview. I wanted it more in-the-now, even though it was beautifully said.
Lovely story. [3]
