Some Excerpts

When did you start writing fanfiction?

I started writing fanfiction my freshman year of college. Up until then I'd seen the ALW production of Phantom pretty much every year, but for various reasons, I wouldn't be able to anymore. I missed the story, and the characters, and started browsing around online, and discovered phanfic. The idea of this was completely new to me, because though I'd often thought through new endings and new scenes in my head, I was unfamiliar with the genre of fanfiction, and the idea that anyone else would want to read what I'd written.

I'd like to say that I was inspired to start writing myself because of some truly great works I'd read, but honestly I began writing fanfiction after I read a piece of phanfiction that was just awful. I felt the need to write something better, out of respect to the characters. And to get the taste of that other story out of my mouth.

Would you agree that fanfiction is a genre dominated by women, and if so, why do you think it's so?

I think it varies depending on the subject of the fanfiction - Phantom of the Opera, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for example, have a largely female fan base, and accordingly they have a largely female group of fanfiction writers and readers. If you took another fandom, like X-files, or Star Wars, I think you would find a higher proportion of male writers.

This is a site devoted to antagonists. Could you reveal us your favourite Mr. Bad Guy?

When it comes to loving "bad guy" characters, Erik was my first favorite, and he'll always have a place in my nostalgic thoughts. The current favorite, however, is Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think I've got a thing for guys with somewhat questionable sanity.
