Sigrid is a character from The Hobbit (film series).

She is the eldest child of Bard and has two younger siblings, Bain and Tilda. She lives with her family in Esgaroth, but moves to Dale during the final movie. She does not appear in the books.

Canon

Sigrid is about 16 in The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies. We first meet her when Bard sneaks Bilbo and the dwarves into their home. While the dwarves are staying there, she expresses curiosity about them, and when Kíli is injured, she helps him. She protects her sister during the orc raid on the house and again while Tauriel steers their boat out of town during Smaug's attack. She later appears in the camp on shore with her family, and then again in Dale, where she tries to help the other refugees. She is nearly killed during the Battle of the Five Armies, but she and Tilda are saved by their brother and father.

Sigrid appears to be the practical sibling, asking questions and reacting sensibly to events like Kíli's illness and the orc invasion of her house.

Fandom

Though Sigrid is supposed to be 1–2 years younger than Bain, the fact that the actress is a month older than Bain's actor and that she looks quite a bit older than him has led to Sigrid often being interpreted as 16 or 17 when the dwarves arrive. She is also usually portrayed as a surrogate mother to her siblings and as the lady of the house, especially once Bard becomes Lord of Dale.

Relationships

Sigrid's most important relationships in fanworks are usually with her family. As the caretaker of Bain and Tilda, she is often shown fretting about them and doing domestic duties for them or for her father. She is also seen in fanworks with Bofur, who is played by the actress's real life father (though Tilda is more likely to interact directly with him), and with Tauriel, who sometimes acts as an older sister figure or friend to her in the wake of the battle. She is also frequently seen befriending Kíli in works where he survives the battle.

Shipping

The most common ship for Sigrid is Fíli/Sigrid.[1] The other ship that occurs more than a few times is Sigrid/Tauriel.[2]

Tropes

  • Domestic - Sigrid is typically shown as the mothering caretaker of her siblings, the one who runs her household. She is usually depicted as very devoted to her siblings.
    • Baking/Cooking - One of Sigrid's common skills is cooking, especially baking.
    • Sewing - Another common household skill of Sigrid's. She is sometimes shown sewing or embroidering to keep her hands busy during conversations.
    • Healing - Sigrid is frequently called upon to help in the aftermath of the battle. She is sometimes a healer to members of the company or the people of Dale. This is often presented as an extension of her general skills at running a household.
  • Rags to Riches - When Bard becomes King of Dale, Sigrid usually becomes Lady of Dale, since she has no mother. This often requires even more work than before, because Dale is rebuilding. Sigrid is usually shown as humble and hard-working, rather than excited by her sudden change of status. (This is in keeping with her father's canonical attitude toward leadership.)
  • Bow and Arrows - Due to her father's skill, when Sigrid learns a weapon, it is usually a bow. Sometimes this serves as a plot point. Her teachers are usually Tauriel or Kíli, not her father.
