Shotgun Mary/Sister Lilith is a fanon femslash pairing in the Warrior Nun fandom.
Canon
Shotgun Mary and Sister Lilith are both part of The Order of the Cruciform Sword. Their first scene together is one of conflict as the current Warrior Nun, Sister Shannon, is dying and the halo needs to be removed from her body to be passed to the next in line, Lilith. Mary is devastated by Shannon's death (and there are hints in canon that she and Shannon may have been a couple or Mary may have been in love with her) and threatens Lilith when she suggests removing the halo.
When a series of events leads to Ava receiving the halo, Lilith and Mary both go after her with different objectives. Lilith intends to remove the halo and take it for herself as Ava is ill-prepared to be the Warrior Nun, meanwhile Mary wants to encourage Ava to take up the Warrior Nun mantle herself.
When Lilith is presumed dead, killed by the Tarask, Mary mourns her death along with the others. After being resurrected, when Lilith arrives at the Vatican and tries to stop Ava from reaching Adriel, Mary comforts her and supports her through some of the difficulties she is having post-resurrection.
In season two, Lilith is the one who tracks down Father Vincent, both to exact vengeance and in search of Mary who, in canon, has been missing since the events of the season one finale.
Fandom
The conflict between Mary and Lilith, as well at the moments of affection between them, particularly the scene in the Vatican, drew some fans towards the pairing.
anyway, lilshotgun have enemies to lovers superiority and that's the good stuff đphoenix-rises-again [1]
I think when Mary comes back, she should first hear about the dozen guards that Lilith murdered trying to find her. It's more romantic that way, you know?
On Archive of Our Own, the pairing is tagged in 118 works as of March 2024, with 54 of them being 'otp:true'.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
Examples Wanted: Editors are encouraged to add more examples or a wider variety of examples. |
- Shotgun Mary calling Lilith "Babygirl" - In canon, Mary has the following line directed to Lilith, "Babygirl, I have two shotguns. When you have two shotguns, you don't need combat skills." The babygirl term of endearment often pops up in Mary/Lilith fanworks.
- Alternate Canon/Canon Divergence - Mary did not return for season two, but the way her character was written out left the opportunity for her to return in a manner than made canonical sense. Some Mary/Lilith authors explore this alternate canon to bring Mary back.
- Alternate Universe - AUs are popular within the Warrior Nun fandom and a notable number of Mary/Lilith fanworks are of the pairing in a wide range of different AUs.
