front page of v.2 n.6
  • minutes from the September 22, 1981 club meeting
  • a thank you to an unknown person who "whisked the projector away to the Centennial Library before it turned into a pumpkin at 9:30 p.m."

This issue has a report by Executive Officer Judy Zoltai of the May 1981 meeting which appears to have been a disaster:

Alas, it has been five short months since the "New" Council organized its first STW meeting in May of this year, and I am sorry to say, organization and punctuality has deteriorated considerably. From the May meeting commencing with announcements at a few minutes past 7:00 to the September meeting not starting until approximately 7:20. Or, as one member in the audience later relayed to me, "It was hard to tell exactly when the meeting started. At 7:20 Steve stood for approximately five minutes before beginning the announcements while people were still milling around the stage."

After Steve made the announcements (biggie being the Hallowe'en Social on October 31—don’t forget!) he then introduced Greg Young who in turn introduced his idea of the spontaneous play. After asking for volunteers, he took them off stage for a ten-minute preparation session, leaving the stage empty for the members. (Let me add that this was not Greg’s fault as he was told that something else would be taking place while they prepared.) At this point the audience was getting a bit restless. The play went on and was short (10-15 minutes) but entertaining.

During this time, your Commander and Executive Officer were dashing through downtown Winnipeg to pick up a projector (needed for the promised ST episode) from the Centennial Library. Why wasn’t it at the Planetarium already you may ask? It was a case of, "Who, me? I didn't know, I thought you were looking after it." etc.

Meanwhile . . . back on stage ... a certain person was gallantly trying to entertain and keep the members from fidgeting after 15 to 20 minutes intermission when he overheard phrases such as "boring" etc. At this point he became frustrated and a bit hysterical explaining that he went to a lot of trouble preparing a speech to fill in time and that the other members just sit there, do not participate, but when another member tries to entertain he is called boring.

The message may be true, but the presentation was too aggressive. There were first time visitors in the audience who felt very tense and who decided against taking out memberships due to the outburst.

Enter Commander and Exec (both should not have left the meeting; one should have stayed in charge) with slightly broken projector. Everyone watched the excellent "City on the Edge of Forever’’ and at 9:30 quietly left.

We have excuses but the members deserve better. An individual is not to blame, but the Council as a whole. Our attendance has dropped sharply and the Council realizes it has to pull up its socks. I hope this newsletter shows that the Council is very concerned and does not have to be told we're getting sloppy. We know, and do not like it either. We are now in the process of pulling up our socks, suggestions welcome.

  • fans are urged to participate in a letter campaign to keep Spock in the next Trek movie
  • this issue contains meeting minutes, guest speaker was Roger Woloshyn of the planetarium (his third appearance with the club), the topic was Roger's visit to the Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena, he provided a slide show, Roger also talked about the Jupiter Effect which in 1982 would cause a lineup of planets to cause a lot of earthquakes and possibly cause California to fall into the ocean - the club's minute taker wrote: "Personally, I hope California doesn't go, at least not until we find out whether Paramount has ruined Star Trek II. After that, maybe they'll deserve it."
  • this issue contains much club news, including a request by a fan for submissions for a Trek cookbook
  • puzzles
  • an original fiction story called "R, Semi-Private Eye" by Ruth Anderson, Shauna Born, Rob Downie, Laura Honke, Zoe Kogan, Leslie Martens, and Richard McKay

Judy Zoltai has a message to fans and urges members to come to the next meeting to sign a petition to keep Spock in the upcoming Star Trek film:

The existence, not only of our club, but of Star Trek itself, is in jeopardy, and we fans must do something about it. As you are no doubt aware, Paramount has just finished filming Spock's death, which they may or may not use in the upcoming movie. We would like to help them make this decision. If they do not wish to use Leonard Nimoy/Spock in future films, there are alternatives to having him annihilated. They could give him his own ship, make him an ambassador, or send him back to Vulcan for some important post or to complete the ritual of Kohlinahr, to name just a few possibilities.

Nimoy and the fans do not want Spock to die; only some Paramount officials want Spock to die. After Spock, who will their next target be?

We are asking you to attend the Feb. 16 meeting and sign a petition which will be presented to the Winnipeg offices of Paramount at a date to be announced later. All are welcome to join us when we make the presentation.

The world of Star Trek needs the fans to keep it alive, so be sure to attend the meeting and sign the petition.
