Harassment Allegations

On 24 August 2021 twitter user sweetlolixo, who writes MDZS book-canon Wangxian fanfic, tweeted a link to a 47-page google doc with evidence of how she was the victim of persistent stalking and harassment since March. sweetlolixo became suspicious some time after Shino blocked her on twitter, but then started following her and some of her friends with a private account (luanzanggang). Between May and August sweetlolixo received hateful messages, some anonymous, some from throwaway accounts, on her AO3 works, along with her CuriousCat and Twitter. Many of these comments followed similar themes: that sweetlolixo's Wangxian was heteronormative, that sweetlolixo's fic was OOC or feminizing Wei Wuxian, that sweetlolixo was too influenced by tv canon, that sweetlolixo wasn't Chinese enough, that the commenter was ashamed to be from the same country as sweetlolixo. Sometimes the commenters would pretend to be genuine fans and then say they were disappointed in the writing. Over the course of months sweetlolixo gathered evidence implicating Shino and submitted it to the AO3 Policy & Abuse team. AO3 Abuse investigated and informed sweetlolixo that they had permanently suspended all the accounts associated with the harasser, who was one individual.

Although the team could not directly confirm that Shino was the one responsible, sweetlolixo pointed to Shino's recent announcement that she would no longer post to AO3 as evidence that sweetlolixo's suspicions were correct. More significantly, sweetlolixo shared the screencaps of the twitter DM conversation with the luanzanggang account in which she confronted Shino: the twitter account first claimed to be Shino's sister and a big fan of sweetlolixo, apologized for accidentally offending sweetlolixo and insisted Shino was innocent. Control was then allegedly passed to Shino, who said that she had given the luanzanggang account to her sister, that the sister would be the one responsible for any harassment, but Shino didn't know anything about it. Shino also referenced her own mental suffering, asked why sweetlolixo had a "grudge" against her and accused sweetlolixo of upsetting her sister.

Shino's explanation was greeted with incredulity and amusement by many fans who read the exposé. Comparisons were made to MsScribe. It is unknown whether Shino has a sister.

After fans read the gdoc by sweetlolixo, other MDZS writers including yiqie and cafecliche came forward and said that the comments looked similar to what they, too, had received at various times. rikke reported receiving hate comments from March/April 2019 to the present. AO3 user geragrena reported being harassed with accusations of plagiarism starting in November 2020. Yet other fans came forward to say that Shino had harassed them in previous fandoms, such as DRAMAtical Murder. It seemed that Shino had harassed people going back as far as 2014. A common refrain was that people no longer wanted to write for a fandom after being subject to constant hate. Multiple people hid or deleted their AO3 accounts to get away from the harassers.

MDZS fandom dealt with the realization that one person had harassed so many writers out of the fandom. Fans of Shino felt disappointed or betrayed. Several of the victims pointed out that Shino had been claiming to be a target of harassment herself for years, and people felt embarrassed for having expressed sympathy for Shino in the past. People speculated that Shino's motive was jealousy of other people's talent or popularity.

On August 25 Shinocchi tweeted "I am sorry for all the damage, I have no idea how many people are affected, but if you want to confront me either here or in my DM, I will accept them all." and then interacted with sympathetic followers.[1] Twitter user mirrorofprinces shared screencap evidence that on her own website Shino was framing herself as a victim of harassment by people with grudges.[2] So Shinocchi tweeted something longer on August 27/28 that more closely resembled an admission of guilt, then deleted her twitter account.[3] People did not believe it to be a sincere apology.[4][5][6][7] mirrorofprinces commented that Shino's apology was vague and shared more screencap evidence that Shino was still trying to frame herself as the victim on her own website.[8]

Additionally, on November 21, 2021, sweetlolixo tweeted that shinocchi is allegedly still harassing her, citing the return of the @iamshinocchi account on Twitter and the high numbers of private quote-retweets on her tweets.[9]

Consequences For Other Fans Named Shino

Due to the many harassment allegations against Shinocchi, at least one fanartist named Shino got harassed on twitter and unlocked their account to say that they were not the same person and wondered if they should change their name because they didn't want to be associated with what Shino had done.[10]

Other fans with similar names decided to change their usernames for fear of being confused with Shinocchi.[citation needed]
