Reactions and Reviews

1985

A confused, disjointed effort in which a weepy, suicidal Kirk is visited by a ludicrous personification of Death. [1]

1989

Excellent title, really fit the story. I feel it's very possible that Kirk would have considered, if not actually tried, committing suicide after Spock died. The figure Kirk saw was the personification of Death and it showed itself to Kirk as something to be welcomed, not feared - an attempt to persuade Kirk to finish what he'd started. The final inducement it offered for Kirk's eternal companionship was the one that would certainly work - Spock. I really liked when Spock, in McCoy's body, came to stop Kirk from joining Death. A very interesting story. [2]

I really liked, this story a lot. I thought that James Kirk thinking of suicide at that particular time not all that surprising; after all, he had just lost Spock. I also liked the idea of Death being always near James Kirk. A very unique idea. This I can understand. With all the people that James Kirk has lost in his life, both professional and personal, it would be very productive for Death be near James Kirk. I also liked the idea that Spock/McCoy walked in on Kirk and Death discussing Kirk's suicide. Spock also saying that he was his was a nice touch, too. I also thought this story lead up to Star Trek III: Search for Spock very well at the end. Why didn't Kirk realize, though, that Spock wasn't with Death yet? Death was certainly telling him that. I liked the story very much. [3]

1992

Strange, intriguing, even a little erotic tale post-STII of Kirk almost being seduced into death by death itself, very imaginative and memorable. [4]
