The Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest was a Harry Potter slash Fuh-Q Fest for the character Severus Snape, related to Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest Archive. In 2013 it was hosted by Niuserre (Hayley) on her http://quasi-evil.net/ website.

It is notable as the first Fuh-Q Fest outside of Star Trek fandom.[1] The fest was organized by T'Boy (Severus Snape Fuh-Q Fest Coordinator) and Luthien (Severus Snape Fuh-Q Fest Archivist).

First Wave

The first wave of the fest ran from March 29 to May 31, 2002. Its theme was a 'lucky dip' challenge, the participants being allocated pairings and scenarios at random.[2]

There were 149 stories by 63 authors written for the first wave.

Second Wave

The second wave of the fest ran from July 12 to September 13, 2002. Unlike the first wave, where participants were assigned pairings and scenarios, the second wave was "open slather" and participants could select their own pairing and scenario.

There were 168 stories written for the second wave.[3]

Third Wave

The fest returned for a third wave from June 13 to August 10, 2003. The third wave offered scenario challenges, similar to the previous waves, as well as a new Three Word Challenge option.

There were over 220 stories written for the third wave. Stories were posted to the archive through September 2, 2003.

Fest Site & Archive

The Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest website as it appeared on March 30, 2013.

Information about the fest, including the rules and lists of prompt pairings and scenarios, was located at the fest website. The website was created by Luthien and used graphics by AusMac.

Stories written for the fest were hosted at the Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest Archive. Stories were exclusively archived at the SSFF archive for approximately a month after each fest wave ended; after that time authors were free to post their stories elsewhere.

The site was originally hosted at sockiipress.org. A GeoCities site was used as a temporary mirror archive when sockiipress.org was down, and as a warning page gateway to the sockiipress.org site. It moved to Luthien's new domain at ebonyx.org in October 2003.[4] It was taken offline temporarily in April 2005, and returned in February 2006 at quasi-evil.net, Niuserre's website.[5]

Updates to the archive were posted at the SnapeFF_update Yahoo! group. The site went offline sometime between 2013 and 2016.

Impact

The fest has been credited for contributing to the popularity of ships such as Harry/Snape and Snape/Lupin, and "the number and variety of Snapeslash stories" in general.[6]

Luthien discussed the fest and how it contributed to the rise in popularity of the Harry/Snape ship in a 2005 interview for Essential Snarry Reader:

HP slash fandom is a lot more “anything goes” now than it was then – or at least it seems that way to me. I remember, when I first got involved in HP fandom, being surprised at how easily squicked a reasonable number of Snape slash fans seemed to be. I’m not talking about being squicked by kinks – though that was certainly there too – but simply by pairings. One of our aims when planning the first wave of the Severus Snape Fuh-q Fest was to think of as many “challenging” pairings as we could and throw them out there for people to write, to try to shake people up a bit. I think the boom in Snape/Harry coincided with the first wave of the Fest, and the Fest gave writers an opportunity to try out new and different things – such as Snape/Harry - and also, in turn, exposed a lot of readers to the pairing. There were a lot of new people coming into the fandom at around that time, perhaps because of the first movie but certainly just drifting in from other directions as well. cybele and josan both wrote their first HP stories as part of the Fest, and a number of minx’s early stories were written for the Fest, too, just to give a few examples.
