I don't know if you'll want to include Roberta Rogow's "Search Party" here. It's a longer example of the same thing [1], but the surprise is only incidental to the growth of the characters. The author keeps you sufficiently concerned with Wilma's problems with being outside the city to keep you from seeing the very fairly planted clues about the identity of the signaler they are looking for. Misdirection at its best. [2]
