Sean Astin played the character Sam Gamgee in the 2001-2003 movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings. He participated in hundreds of interviews and events promoting the films, and in the cast commentary and the behind-the-scenes sections of the LotR DVD versions.

There and Back Again: An Actor's Tale is the book that Sean wrote about his experiences before, during and after filming.

Sean's other popular roles include the films Rudy, The Goonies, and the TV series Jeremiah and 24.

Many fans who write RPF slash stories depict Sean in a romantic and/or sexual relationship with Elijah Wood: the pairing name is "Sean/Elijah".

Sean is an enthusiastic long distance runner, and has created a project called #Run3rd. The idea is "I run first for myself, second for my family, and I #run3rd for you." He accepts dedications for his runs via his twitter account @SeanAstin.
