Scylla Io is a minor character from the Saint Seiya series. He is a Marina, one of the seven generals of Poseidon's Army and the guardian of the Mammoth Pillar of the South Pacific Ocean in Poseidon's Underwater Sanctuary.
History
Io's appearance in the story is short-lived. He defends the pillar of the South Pacific Ocean against Shun and is defeated by him. Despite being a minor character, Io is a loved and popular character in Chile, as he was born in the island of Saint Felix. A big amount of content featuring him is made by chilean fanartists and fanwriters. His fanbase in the Spanish-speaking fandom is significantly bigger than the rest, including the Japanese fandom.
The most popular themes in fanworks about Io are headcanons about his origin. He's also often drawn with his animals, a snake, a wolf, a bee, a bat, a bear and an eagle or with Scylla from the myth. Chilean flags and other symbols are also common. In fanfics written in Spanish he sometimes uses chilean vocabulary and expressions. His birthday on March 2nd is an important date for Io's fans, and is celebrated by posting new content or memes.
In September 2022, Io appeared in the new Saint Seiya Spin-off: "Rerise of Poseidon". This fact was highly celebrated by fans, who had been asking for more content for Poseidon's army. This is the first time since 1986 that new canon content is released about this set of characters (apart from the skins for the mobile phone videogames).
Ships
- Seahorse Baian/Scylla Io (aka IoBai and Pacifica). Io is seen interacting only with Shun. Still, and despite never interacting with each other in the source material, this is the most popular ship for Io. Baian is the guardian of the North Pacific Ocean and that is the reason the pairing is called Pacifica sometimes.
- Andromeda Shun/Scylla Io (aka IoShun). Because they were rivals, works around the ship often contain angst.
- Scylla Io/Siren Sorrento (aka IoSorre and Cono Sur). Never interacted in canon but as they are the guardians of the South Atlantic and South Pacific, fans make them bond.
