Summary

"When Spock leaves for Gol, saying good-bye is harder for Kirk than he ever realized it could be."

Reactions and Reviews

I thought this short piece too simplistic for what it as trying to accomplish. In my book, a conversation of less than two pages isn't enough to cover all of the complexities of Kirk and Spock's relationship and separation prior to V'ger. The conversation was far too shallow to set everything right again. Also, the first person usage was awkward, not only in that some of Kirk's phrases sounded more like narration than, inner thoughts, but also in that the switching back and forth between the past tense and present tense. I had a hard time knowing exactly when/where Kirk was at different stages of the vignette. What I did like were some of the passionate phrases: "Everything I did. I did to impress him"; "his being with me, it was iike being on a high". [1]

"Saying Good-bye" by Anna Parrish was one of her better short stories. [2]
