Saru is a main character in the show Star Trek: Discovery.
Canon
Saru is the first Kelpien to enter Starfleet. Kelpiens are a species that were hunted as prey on Kaminar, their home planet, and thus evolved the ability to sense the coming of death, giving them a reputation for cowardice. Saru is introduced as the Science Officer of the USS Shenzhou. He serves as First Officer of the USS Discovery under Gabriel Lorca.
