Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas is a Saint Seiya spin-off created by Shiori Teshirogi. The story is an alternate interpretation of the original author's timeline about the 18th century holy war against Hades. Most of the characters, except for a few, are Teshirogi's invention. The series also has an anime, which was canceled for legal reasons after the second season. Instead of being focused on the Bronze Saints as the source material, TLC focuses on the stories of the beloved Gold Saints, catering to the wishes of the fans who had been asking for more prominence for them.
This spinoff also features a series of gaidens, each dedicated to a specific Gold Saint.
Fandom
The Saint Seiya fandom's opinions on the TLC fandom are highly polarized. The prequel has very loyal fans who are still waiting more than ten years after the third season of the series.
Many controversies exist around The Lost Canvas fans, which have been unresolved for years.
There are fans who consider The Lost Canvas superior to the author's comics, both in plot and character, conflicting with fans who prefer Kurumada's version of the same holy war.
In the fandom, the most loyal and controversial fans of TLC have come to be known as "Canvatards" a pejorative nickname that alludes to the perceived excessive fanaticization that a fraction of the fandom has for the series. In the Brazilian fandom, they use the word "Canvetes" instead.
People often look to the Gold Saints to identify with the character with whom they share a zodiac sign. In the original series, some Gold Saints had more prominence than others, and had more chances to demonstrate their power than others. That made fans find in TLC a way to feel that the Gold Saint of their zodiac sign had been "done justice".

Controversies and Criticism

Harassment of Chimaki Kuori
The Italian twitter account Saint Seiya News known for being pro-Lost Canvas, harassed the author of Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho, another spinoff of the series, on Twitter with multiple accounts.[1] In the same incident, the person, faced with backlash from the fandom, responded with racist comments about the South American fandom, saying their opinion doesn't matter as they don't have money to support the franchise and have to resort to piracy.[2] He also blamed South American fans because mangas aren't selling and the franchise has to cancel projects.[3]
Chimaki Kuori interacted with some of the harassment tweets, despite the removal of some messages later on. Her Twitter account was temporarily locked, and upon reopening it, she expressed gratitude in English to the international fans who supported her.
1st Tweet: To Saintia Fans abroad.I was surprised at your many words, Thank you very much, Sorry I can not reply.
I got enough power from you, until now. I have enough passion, enthusiasm to continue this work to the end of Saintia Sho, already. That is my mission.[4]
Sorry for my poor English.🙏[5]

2nd Tweet: To Saintia Fans abroad,... Thank you very much for your support. I summarized what I wanted to tell you, corrected the expression as much as possible.@cmk_k
In response to this tweet, several fans expressed gratitude to Chimaki Kuori for her manga, sharing images of their Saintia Sho collection, and advising her to disregard any negativity. Some individuals suggested that people might be reaching out to her with complaints due to a lack of alternative platforms to voice their feedback regarding the anime's perceived poor quality.
Manigoldo and Albafica
Cancer and Pisces are two gold saints that some fans (especially of these zodiac signs) feel were poorly treated in the source material. Fans of Cancer Manigoldo and Pisces Albafica in particular have a reputation in the fandom of constantly comparing Manigoldo to Cancer Death Mask and Albafica to Pisces Aphrodite. To a much lesser extent, Aldebaran also suffers from this issue.
Rumors about Masami Kurumada
Some TLC fans have a reputation for hating the author of Saint Seiya. Many unsubstantiated rumors circulate about him, the most common being that Kurumada is behind the cancellation of TLC as he was jealous that a Spinoff was having more success than his own story. Another rumor regarding the author says that he storms off from interviews every time he is asked about The Lost Canvas.
