Sam Moskowitz was a founding member of science fiction fandom and First Fandom. He was a prominent member of the clubs New Fandom and the Queens Science Fiction League.

In 1938, Moskowitz and Will Sykora ran the First National Science Fiction Convention, usually known as the Newark Convention. Fancyclopedia describes the Newark Convention as "marred by feuding and sniping over Michelism, the ISA, the planned First Worldcon, and any other convenient theme."[1]

At 19, Moskowitz served as chairman of the first Worldcon in 1939. He, Sykora, and James V. Taurasi, known collectively as the Triumvirs, expelled six members of the Futurians, a rival New York club. (See The Great Exclusion Act.) Moskowitz was the most vocal of the three in defending his actions, and the feud spilled over into many different zines of the era. His seminal 1954 book The Immortal Storm was a lengthy chronicle of early fandom happenings, including his feud with the Futurians.
