Russell T. Davies is a Welsh television writer and series creator best known for the original Queer as Folk, the Doctor Who reboot in 2005 and spinoff series Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
A fan of the show since childhood, Davies used his position as a successful television writer to help get Doctor Who back on the air. He conspired with co-fan and BBC's Head of Drama Jane Tranter, as well as BBC Wales Head of Drama, Julie Gardner, with whom he had made Casanova with David Tennant. Openly gay, Davies has an interest in honest and compassionate portrayal of queer characters on screen. He created Doctor Who and Torchwood's Captain Jack Harkness, an attractive omnisexual character, out of this intention.
In 2009, Davies gave up the helm of Doctor Who to Steven Moffat. He produced Torchwood in the United States until his partner fell ill and they returned to Britain. Since then he has produced the CBBC drama Wizards vs Aliens, and the BBC Worldwide show Cucumber.
RTD has had two 'runs' with Dr Who which are distinguished as RTD1 Era and RTD2 Era.
