Canon
Root is a secret organisation created by Shimura Danzou. Like ANBU, Root members are elite ninja with strong skills.
The organisation was officially dismembered after the Uchiha massacre by the Third Hokage.
Unofficial, it continued to exist at least until Danzou's execution by Sasuke.
Root members are indoctrinated by Dazou, and trained to suppress all emotions. They are raised by pair and the last exam before graduation is a match to the death between the two, as part of this indoctrination.
Root members are prevented from divulging informations by a fuinjutsu seal placed on their tongue.

- Sai : When Sai is assigned to team 7 after Sasuke's departure, he's a spy sent by Danzou. He will latter change side and fight against root.
