Risk Worth Taking is a Kirk/Spock Star Trek: TOS story by Deanna Gray.

It was published in the print zine First Time #47.

Summary

"After Spock almost dies when retrieving information on the giant “amoeba,” Kirk finally gets the courage to confess his feelings to him."

Reactions and Reviews

Right after sending Spock into the amoeba creature, Kirk faces his own feelings of love for Spock. McCoy tells Kirk to take the risk of telling Spock he loves him. They go to a beautiful, luxury suite (one of my favorite things!) and Spock comes out wearing a black velvet tuxedo. (Also one of my favorite things, but I don’t know about the velvet.) A little disconcerting because Kirk was only wearing a shirt and slacks. But a lovely moment as their eyes meet (another favorite thing) and then they go to a restaurant (definitely one of my favorite things!). They take a walk by a lake at night and “I have dreamed of what it would be like to kiss you.” They go back to the hotel room and have some wonderful, slow, sensual sex—long, detailed and very hot. Okay—a favorite thing! [1]

"The Immunity Syndrome" is one of the original episodes that strongly reinforces my belief in K/S each time I see it. The level to which Kirk is torn as he makes the correct command decision to send Spock alone into the amoeba is proof enough, but if that doesn't convince you, then watch his demeanor as he waits to learn the fate of the shuttlecraft and the man aboard. Take this very ripe scenario and place it in the hands of talented author Deanna Gray and you have the consummate K/S love story.

The story opens with Kirk rushing through the corridors of his ship to meet Spock as he emerges from the returning shuttle. That mental picture alone gives me goose bumps. When they are finally face to face, Kirk whispers Spock's name and reaches up to caress his cheek -never mind that McCoy and probably the shuttle bay crew are watching intently. Spock's thoughts soon reveal he has accepted the fact that Kirk is his chosen one - his Thy'la, but he can't imagine Kirk will ever have the same feelings for him. He's encouraged by the looks his captain gives him after his return, but not convinced. Meanwhile, in a conversation with Bones, Kirk reveals he's in love with Spock, an admission that comes as no surprise to the pair's best friend. McCoy has a pretty good grasp of the situation and tells Kirk he's convinced that love is returned, but Kirk will have to make the first move.

Next up; shore leave in a place named Sylvan on the planet Arcada where Kirk and Spock share a perfect suite and enjoy a luxurious dinner together followed by a lakeside stroll. The setting is ideal for them to finally confess their love and begin to share that intimacy that has eluded them for so long. Ms. Gray has provided just the right conclusion for "Immunity Syndrome".
