Riley Andersen is a main character in the Disney/Pixar film Inside Out. The plot follows her as her simple life in Minnesota is turned inside out, from the perspective of her emotions. They are Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust, and they control Riley via a console in her brain, known to the emotions as Headquarters.
Canon
Canonically, Riley had her first date with a schoolmate named Jordan, as shown in the short, Riley's First Date.
Fandom
When Riley is shipped, it is often in a crossover due to a lack of canonical pairings other than the aforementioned Jordan. Among the most common pairings include Hiro Hamada from Big Hero 6, as his age and location are practically ideal, and also Violet Parr from The Incredibles, or Rosa Rivera from Coco. Again, the similar ages make this ship feasible. Other ships generally involve OCs.
Riley's emotions are also shipped in fan fiction, due to them being sentient, and thus able to express love. Just about every pairing is common, regardless of the emotion's prospective gender. OC emotions aren't uncommon, either, nor is the inclusion of Riley's imaginary friend, Bing Bong.
Headcanons
Riley's androgynous stature and unisex name has had fans considering the possibility of Riley perhaps being transgender, intersex, or gay. Some have put forth that Riley is nonbinary, since "she's shown to be the only person to have emotions of multiple genders."[1][2][3][4]
While it has opened up the possibilities for shipping, plot developments and other fannish events, it had also induced heated arguments over Riley's gender and sexuality.
