His Fannish Autobiography: 1999

About the Author/Webmaster: The guy who runs this site and writes fics. (Picture coming Soon)

Who am I? Well, I'm Rex, the twelve year old kid who runs this site and write fics. I was born on September 08, 1987, AD, and I live in South Louisiana. I'm a guy, one of the few guys out there that writes HP stuff. I specialize in action/adventure fics, but I love to write black comedy. Black comedy is really funny at times. I love to read; my favorite book is The Perfect Storm. I want to be a movie director, and my absolute favorite movie is Three Kings. Other really good ones are Rushmore, The Insider, The Usual Suspects, and Raising Arizona. The Coen Brothers did Raising Arizona, and those guys are film geniuses. They're my favorite directors, even though Joel is only credited as director and Ethan as producer. But these guys also did Fargo and THe BIg Lebowski, as well as many other great films. (Yes, I know this is a long paragraph.) I am trying to cram as much in here about me as I can...oh yeah! At home, my best friends are Cory, Kane, John, Lyall, Brian, Ashlin, Tre's, Travis, and then there's my fellow Beta officers I don't exactly like at all but I must mention them for some reason: Michelle, Emily, Brittany, and AShley. Online, there's Gypsy, Flourish, moxie, Virgo, and Laura. They've helped me out a lot and can stand my bickering and complaining about the fact that I don't get feedback on my fics. And my personal heroes are Steven Spielberg, the Coen Brothers, George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry, and M. Night Shyamalan. And that's it until I think of more scribble (Hey, that's the font!) for you to read about me.

His Fannish History

Part One: From the Quidditch Field to the Apocalypse

My long twisted journey in Harry Potter fandom began when I was 11. My mom read my siblings and me The Sorcerer's Stone over a series of nights as a way for us to spend time together. She got to the second to last chapter, and then the next day before she read it I picked the book up and finished it. It was that damn good. Then I ruined it all to my brother, and my mom found out.

So she decided to give me the second one, which I read in a day. The third was due in a month or two...on my twelfth birthday: September 8, 1999.

It was a long wait for that book. And at that time there was relatively few Harry Potter websites on the web. So I fired up my dad's computer, connected to the Internet via our awesome 26.6 k dial-up modem, went to Yahoo, and typed in "Harry Potter." This lead me to the Unofficial Harry Potter Fan Club...which was at Geocities at the time. It was not the powerhouse for 5 year olds it is now; there were only a few people on it, but the webmaster had dedication.

And a links page.

This links page led me to my first fandom buddy: Gypsy of the Realm...then at Angelfire. Inspired by her homegrown webpage, I sent her off an email right after making my website and asking her to be my friend. Okay, maybe not exactly like that, but to fill you in on time frame...right now it's August 31, 1999...a whole millenium ago! Well, I got my site together...it launched (well, only on certain computers that Angelfire wasn't a bitch with) on my 12th birthday, September 8, 1999. I got the third book September 10 as a late birthday present from my grandma, and I totally devoured it. It was awesome, my new favorite book.

Then around the same time, Gypsy's fan fic came out...actually it was a few days before that, but whatever. I read it and totally dug it, told her the same, and the seeds of a friendship were born. (For now though, we are very much out of touch and haven't spoken to each other since the movie came out.)

So we got to talking...and my idea for a fanfic was a Hogwarts band. Me and the Gyps did a huge failed project with people and what instruments Harry Potter characters should play...and I wrote Chapter 1 of a never finished fanfic (3 freaking K, so long), but not without much hesitation and trying my hand in Pokemon fanfic throughout October. I was shit, and I wrote retarded shit stories. They were all very dumb, retarded, and stupid. I'd rather not talk about them, but I will. One was a cliche called Who Wants to be a PokeMillionaire (incredibly retarded) and the other two were about Team Rocket or something...I don't really remember...but their titles were Dreams and Dreams 2. They were incredibly stupid.

Harry Potter and the Band of Hogwarts was published in November of 1999. I was already becoming lazy, and had neglected my webpage a little bit. The fanfic sucked, and received relatively mixed reviews from people. I was too lazy to even finish it; I don't think I liked it much.

In December I started writing a fanfic called Colin Creevey Versus the Apocalypse. Taking cue from Gypsy, it would not be published until it was totally finished. I wrote three chapters over the period of a month. (Unlike everyone else here, I never had writing talent to begin with. I think I started off as a much worse writer, struggling to write a page. But after time I got better and better until now, where I can go on for page after page about writing a single page.

Colin Creevey Versus the Apocalypse had a simple concept: Colin Creevey, everyone's least favorite character (and naturally one of my favorites, with Lockhart and Lee Jordan), has to save the world from an evil sorcerer. It paralleled itself with your normal Harry Potter book plotline, and the main characters had tiny roles. It came out January 29, 2000, on FanFiction.Net, at that time portal for all things fan fiction. [snipped] [3]
