Reactions and Reviews
1992
The Kirk in this story was harder than he appears in most stories, but he was certainly in character for the plot. The ease with which he accepts the death of the Romulans is contrasted with his distress over Spock's possible demise. [1]
This is a 39-page a/u story where Kirk is forced to save Spock in the rages of Pon Parr. The reason Pon Parr starts is an original idea. There is only about one day's preparation time. This Kirk, however, is prepared to let Spock die -- and almost does. Their "farewell" scene was especially nicely done.
The writing and dialogue throughout is excellent. At one point, they discuss "real love".
- "Without doubt, that is the rarest commodity in the Empire."
- "Yeah..." Kirk shivered with cold and more. "...and neither of us has it."
I liked the realism of this story. Kirk's bottom hurts. Spock's penis is chafed and sore. Pon Parr -- even in an abbreviated version -- is not easy on either man. [2]
- Spock sighed softly. "Apparently, not an iota."
