Editorial
Oh, my. The first time I watched The X-Files, I could tell that Fox Mulder was one very special agent. I liked Dana Scully too, but hoped fervently that the two would never become romantically involved; they just didn't have the right chemistry.
Then the character of Assistant Director Walter S. Skinner was introduced and—wow! My prayers to the gods of homoerotica had been answered: Skinner was the perfect love match for Mulder. And I wasn't the only one who thought so. Eventually I got up the nerve to join the legion of fans who wrote M/Sk fic. One of these was the incomparable Xanthe, mentor and friend, who chose the word "requited" to represent the M/Sk dynamic. In March 1999, she formed a cozy little online community of dedicated M/Sk authors and named it—what else?—Requited. (Was I honoured to be included? You bet I was!)
When the last few seasons of The X-Files and its ultimate cancellation left many of us feeling unrequited, we decided to do something about it. The result is this zine, which we dedicate with love to BlueMohairbear, C. Davis, dot, rac, Sergeeva, and Wombat—our Requited sisters who, for one reason or another, weren't able to participate this time around. We hope that you enjoy this collection of M/Sk stories, that it leaves you wanting more, and that it inspires the creation of new adventures starring our favourite pairing.
Contents
- Preface by M. Butterfly (i)
- Abducted by Xanthe ("Fox Mulder smiled happily to himself as he pondered his whole alien abduction/falling in love with Walter Skinner analogy. He was lying lazily in bed, having woken up early—a classic sign of hopeless lovesickness—and he was wondering just how much anal probing was going to happen in the next half-hour.") (1)
- Living with Mulder: 1 by Danni ("a snippet in the life") (9)
- Out of the Frying Pan by Elizabeth Gerber ("My first thought, seeing Mark Lopez backed up against the wall, was that he had always seemed so tall to me. He 'd always loomed over me, whispering, taunting. The man, that new teacher, wasn 't even touching him. He stood about two inches in front of Mark, glowering down at him, the fluorescent lights glinting off his glasses, his fists clenched, the muscles in his arms bunched under his long-sleeved polo shirt. He fabulous.") (11)
- Hatteras Light by Rosalita (""C'mon, Walter. We've been sitting in this car for over an hour, and I need to stretch. Look, we'll just hop over that sand dune, have a swim, and when we come back, the traffic will probably have cleared up."") (73)
- Human by M. Butterfly (""Whether you choose to believe me or not. Agent Mulder, I enjoyed your company that night. And I know you like basketball, so I thought you 'd be the, uh, ideal person to watch a game with. But if you think I'm being inappropriate or making you uncomfortable—"") (83)
- Living with Mulder: 2 by Danni ("a snippet in the life") (145)
- Perfect Blue by Kiyoko ("Since the encounter with Chazov, Skinner was determined to find out the truth behind all of this and Uncle Sergei. His passport had been taken, as well as his plane ticket, but he didn 't mind at all. Right now, he had everything he needed: his wallet, the key, the address safe inside his head, his willpower— and Mulder, his unique agent. With them, he would find everything.") (147)
- Living with Mulder: 3 by Danni ("a snippet in the life") (287)
- The Ghost and Mr. Skinner by Diana Williams ("He took my hands in his and looked into my eyes, his own eyes filled with sorrow and compassion. "Walter, in a few minutes, people are going to come to the door with bad news. I just want you to know that I'm here for you, and that I'll always be here for you. All right?"") (289)
