The rebellious royal is a character archetype and trope found in both fanon and canon. As such characters are usually female, this trope is more commonly known as the rebellious princess, although male examples of the archetype also exist.
Characters fitting this trope are the black sheep of royal and high-ranking noble families. They defy or outright reject the duties, expectations, and restrictions that their birth places upon them. Some wish to live a simple life, while others wish to forge their own destiny, free of their family's control. For some, this means finding love on their own terms, rejecting arranged marriages and compulsory heterosexuality.
The character may assume a secret identity in order to experience life outside the royal court or escape unwanted responsibilities. It may be considered an example of the lost heir trope when the royal's identity is initially withheld from other characters and/or the audience.
