Next up is Protégé, which is Kono centric fic, how she learned to be a sniper. I really like this fic, not just because it’s a 3-D exploration of Kono’s character but also because it’s a fun fic to read. The absolute batshit crazy that Steve has going for him is something that Kono also occasionally exhibits and I like seeing them being crazy together.[1]
This gripping, insightful fic explores how Kono became the expert marksman we've seen on the show - from Steve! It takes place early in season 1 and slides very easily into canon, fleshing out their relationship in a very believable way. kristen999 always puts in a lot of time and care researching her fics, and it really shows here. The little details give the story a lot of depth and a real sense of authenticity. I really enjoyed the characterizations. Steve is an excellent teacher: skilled, patient, and professional. Kono is perfect as the student who wants to be the best and make him proud.[2]
