Promptober is a term sometimes used to reference the large volume of prompt challenges of different types that happen in fandom spaces, but especially Archive of Our Own and Tumblr during the month of October.
Another use is that the term Promptober will be used more generally by a fandom or group as the name for a challenge set during October.
The influx of fanworks, particular fics, which are often very different in tone and genre due to the biggest three prompt events being Whumptober, Kinktober, and Flufftober, are often the topic of discussions, memes, jokes, and occasionally discourse.
