Reactions and Reviews

1992

I thought "Prince of the Mists" was a nice variation to the usual B/D vampire theme, by not making them vampires, there was a lot more scope for the characters, I felt, and Jane's imagery was gorgeous (loved the image of Doyle as the actor after the performance of Romeo and Juliet). It seemed so casual and yet, very special. [1]

Prince of the Mists by Jane was another good read—this zine was real feet up by the fine material—I loved Bodie in this. Just as well has humility as well as charm and integrity! [2]

Jane's PRINCE OF THE MISTS was excellent. It was impossible to put down. Very romantic and evocative of a gothic horror story from the Victorian Age. [3]

As always, Jane's Prince of the Mists is a well written story. However, I am not particularly keen on vampire stories, especially the darker ones. [4]

"Prince of the Mists" was a lovely vampire story, with lots of suffering, angst and mood. Wouldn't miss a moment of it! You know me—if it's morbid and slushy, you know I'll like it! [5]

2008

It's set in (approximately, judging from various references) Victorian times, between the Vale of Evesham and Stratford-upon-Avon. Bodie is an ex-army spy who has returned from the Sudan, and Doyle is...

...a young but previously successful actor who is now in the thrall and servitude of a Hungarian vampire called Piotr Vladimir Andrej Stobolzni-Leonov. He is regularly "used" terribly, beaten and generally treated badly by the vampire, and Bodie of course has fallen immediately in love with him and is determined to extricate the poor mad boy from Piotr's clutches.

The thing is... as I was reading, I again fell into what seems to be a particularly-Jane world where Doyle suffers ever so nobly but is completely helpless and unable to stand up for himself. He often has tears in his eyes, crumples against Bodie's stronger frame, and although he may dash to the rescue in the end, it's generally only after he's spent a considerable amount of time shrinking against either some wall or Bodie himself, in absolute terror of action.

Bodie, on the other hand, knows what's best for Doyle, has a very confident view of the world, his place in it, and his ability to handle anything and has a tendency to explain to Doyle how the world works, and to protect Doyle's innocent ways.

*headdesk*

You may be unsurprised to find out that this is not how I see either of the characters in the actual episodes of the show... *g*

The thing is - I don't remember being so eye-roll-y when I was first reading Jane's stories, and I'm starting to wonder now if perhaps it's not me, as I originally thought (getting tougher with fic - getting tougher with the causes of fic... *g*) but maybe something more to do with a change in Jane's own style over the years...
