I find that there is a gap between the Kirk who needed to go and have hot sex with a stranger and the Kirk who wanted only eternal loving tenderness with Spock. Kirk thinks that "with Spock it could never be just a quick simple lustful encounter." Never? Why doesn't that bother him? It's hard to believe that Kirk would never again want the exciting urgency of a quickie. There would be no problem if the author hadn't set up a false dichotomy between tender loving intimacy and the fast intense erotic encounter. Both can be had within the same relationship.

Kirk, Spock and McCoy go to a "native" area of a tourist planet. They engage in a very accurate and realistic conversation of rain on Vulcan as they walk through the desert-like terrain. I realty appreciate little touches like that as it demonstrates the writer's skill to set the scene and involve the reader. This was combined with some very good descriptions of people.

Evidently, the culture is primarily hedonistic which Spock finds difficult to understand. He cant comprehend a people who don't want to learn and advance themselves. This seems to me to be perfectly logical, but Kirk confronts Spock about this attitude calling it "bigoted". His continuing argument to Spock is abrasive and out of character, it turns out that Kirk is acting this way because, according to McCoy, he's in love with Spock. Groan.

Except for this beginning, the story is actually rather delightful.. For as Spock goes after Kirk he forces him to confront his feelings. Nicely done and with just the right tone. I realty like lines like this: "With the skill of a practiced maestro, Spock mastered him totally." Oh boy!
