Preferences are a genre of short fic related to Imagines. They are commonly found on Wattpad and Tumblr.
Flourish explained in a tumblr reblog:
“Preferences” are sort of choose your own adventure stories. Within One Direction at least, it’ll usually be a story with five versions—one where “Y/N” (”Your Name”) is paired with one of the five 1D boys. Each of the chapters is written in 5 ways depending on which boy you prefer. But they aren’t usually branching narratives—they’re just one plotline written with multiple versions.[1]
