Wonderful story! Leafing through it, I thought it was gen, so I almost didn't read it. I'm SOOOOOOOOOO glad I did. Jenny has created a tense, well written delima for our lads that kept me riveted from paragraph one to paragraph last. There isn't much sex in it, but when it does happen there is a lovely, 'well, of course' aspect to it. I loved Bodie's added problems, and Doyle was marvelous in dealing with them. Best story in the zine, and the zine was quite good! [1]
This appears as an action story, belonging to the "mystery novel" genre, almost a thriller, as well as a "first time" story (of the usual, slash kind) between two hard men, partners of five years who, all this time, had shared everything: the burdens, plights and merriment of their common destiny without becoming clearly aware of the bond that ties them together, and still need a last blow, a personal tragedy to realise they cannot live or even survive apart, and must cling to each other, as work mates, as friends, maybe as lovers some day soon?So Bodie and Doyle are the target of a perfectly spun, heinous and murderous ploy and charged with a crime they didn't commit. But they are not completely alone and forsaken; Cowley is by their side and eager to defend his owns against all, Minister and police alike. I positively loved this picture of a motherly, fiercely protective Cow, who doesn't abdicate anything of his authority and firm hold on his men but knows whom he can trust and why.
The outcome of the plot is not what's best in the story but, well, it's not exactly a detective novel; the interest is elsewhere. [2]
I really enjoyed it, but then I love stories long on plot. I wish the end hadn't been so ambiguous, though. For a moment there I wasn't sure if they would continue what they had begun. But it seems as they do, so I'm happy.[3]
The ending is open, that's why I wrote: "maybe" but it seems likely they would go on; personally, I like this ambiguity. As usual, I am more interested and touched by the "partners and friends" aspect than by the "lovers" one.[4]
I read this for the first time about a week ago and loved it. I really like it when they stick together through tough odds, and Bodie having an extreme emotional reaction and being cared for by Doyle is a particular, um, thing of mine - I also enjoyed JL's Seasons series, especially the first one - emotional Bodie again, sigh. [5]
Jennifer Lyon's 'Predators' (two parts) is another lovely portrayal of Bodie and Doyle's bond, and although I found the wrap-up a little disappointing, the journey more than made up for it. Lots of action, drama and passion. [6]
