In Danganronpa V3, it is eventually revealed that the students of the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles, before becoming the students we see in the main story, were originally ordinary people, but obsessive fans of the in-world fictional Danganronpa franchise who auditioned to be on the next season. Due to some technical malfunctions on the part of Team Danganronpa (the in-universe studio) while setting up the new season, the people we see in V3 didn't get their memories and personalities overwritten before they were placed into the school building. As far as most of them were concerned, they were ordinary people who were kidnapped. Eventually, Monokuma and the Monokubs gather all the new participants into the facility's gymnasium and properly induct them into the new killing game by using a Flashback Light, a device that uses flashing lights and patterns to cause a "deja-vu" phenomenon in the brain and alter their memories.

Much later in the story, after the remaining members of the cast figure out that their original lives and personalities have been overwritten, Tsumugi shows snippets of the some of the characters' audition tapes to the remaining students to try and break their morale: first Shuichi Saihara's audition tape in presumably its entirety, then short clips from Kaede Akamatsu's and Kaito Momota's.[1] Notably, the people in these clips have very different dispositions compared to the characters as they are written in the game.

Though these alternate versions of the characters are only seen for a short time during the game proper, they became somewhat popular within the fannish community. Writers and artists alike began to speculate about what these people were like before being inducted into Danganronpa.
