Prétear (also known as Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Purītia or Prétear: The New Legend of Snow White) is a Reverse Harem magical girl series that was originally a four-volume manga published in 2000-2001 by Kadokawa. It was adapted into an thirteen-episode anime in 2001. In North America, both the anime and the manga were originally distributed by ADV, and the anime was later re-released by Funimation.

Canon Overview

Prétear follows Awayuki Himeno, a sixteen-year-old who is having trouble adjusting after her widowed father falls in love with and marries a rich woman with two daughters of her own. Things get more complicated when she meets the Leafe Knights, a group of men with magical powers who need the help of a magical girl called a Prétear to purge evil energy and prevent the awakening of a being called The Princess of Disaster. Himeno ends up agreeing to be the Prétear, but not all of the Knights accept her, and she comes to suspect that there's more to the connection between the Prétear and the Princess of Disaster than she's been told. The story incorporates many elements of Snow White as well as other traditional European fairy tales.

The series is notable for a few reasons. First, it stands out as an example of 2000's-era "mature/dark" magical girl stories, featuring tropes that would show up in later deconstruction-type series, such as a heroine who has martial arts abilities and the enemy being another magical girl who has turned evil. Second, Himeno's powers involve literally combining with members of the Leafe Knights in a transformation sequence that is fairly suggestive, which was a point of interest for many fans. [1]
