Most agree that popslash is the fandom that both invented and popularized the portmanteau or "pairing smoosh name". The effects of this can still be seen today; the majority of contemporary fandoms assign portmanteaus to their preferred ships. This practice has entered the mainstream in recent years (see: "Brangelina" and other celebrity portmanteaus that are routinely used by the media), transcending fandom culture to some degree.

• Group Slut Fic, or GSF, was a term that was coined in popslash. It generally referred to stories where every member of a group was involved in the sexual scenes of the story, or the ongoing sexual/emotional relationship that the story portrayed.
• Lynncest or Lynnecest, refers to the crack pairing of Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync and his mother, Lynne. The joke stems from Justin being a self-confessed "momma's boy".
• Cartercest, refers to the pairing of Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys and his younger brother, Aaron Carter. Fic about these two tends to be dark and often contains an underage element.
• Cramp, another crack pairing, this one between Chris Kirkpatrick of 'N Sync and a lava lamp he once mentioned owning.
