In fandom spaces, polls are often used to quickly assess the preferences of a sample of fans.
Sometimes polls assess likes and dislikes.
Some fan work creators use polls to have their fellow fans decide a creative decision.
Online social media platforms—such as FanFiction.Net—often have features that allow users to make polls. Most online polls obtain responses via voluntary sampling, which is notoriously influenced by sampling bias that produces results that aren't representative of an intended population.
Competitions to "win" a poll can become heated enough to trigger conflicts (including discourse/wank/imbroglio/kerfuffle), at times even escalating into fandom wars.
- A Bracket is a series of polls comprising a popularity contest between different subjects of fandom; common examples of topics include media, characters, and ships.
- A Fan Survey tends to be a more formal, higher-effort multi-question questionnaire that collects fans' demographic information.
